Songbird

If I were the type of person who had a songbird,
I wouldn't keep it in a gilded cage.
I'd let it fly about freely,
Day to day, age to age.

They say that if you love something: let it go.
It'll come back if you're not bereft,
And I applied that theory to my little songbird,
But it hasn't ever left.

On some days, my little songbird will sing a song to me.
Usually the songs are sweet and melodic.
And some of these songs, they're part of a series,
So I listen nightly as they wax episodic.

If my little song bird ever had to leave,
It would be as if my heart were struck through by knives.
I recommend that everybody get a songbird
(Though, not mine) and include it in their lives.
